Feeling delicate this morning – from the sun and not the local rum before anyone jumps to conclusions! I wore a t-shirt whilst snorkelling yesterday and still burnt my back! We decide on a lazy day as thunderstorms are forecast again. We set off to explore the island but forgot our pedometer and I wore my flip flops. Two mistakes! Well at least we now know what to do if a hurricane hits!
We walked along the eastern shore, past the ferry jetty where we arrived two days ago and kept going. The accommodation seemed to get posher the further south we went, with private jetties and swimming pools. Dave was in his element with all the brightly coloured buildings and furniture to photograph. The island is definitely preparing for busy season as many of the buildings are being repaired and repainted.
Eventually we arrived at the island airport. I use the term ‘airport’ loosely as we almost tripped over the runway with nothing to stop us walking on it except a sign. The terminal was a small building and the luggage reclaim area was denoted by sign on the outside wall. I think the only airport we have been to that is smaller was at Moremi Crossing in Botswana which was just an airship with a bench for there waiting area and no building in sight.
There were no planes around nor any sort of departure board so we moved on, crossing to the other side of the island to make a circular walk. Unfortunately, the road did not head the right way or correspond with the map on our phone. So we retraced our steps to the main (only) road which headed north/south. We did however spot some locals preparing the lobsters they had caught ready for someone’s supper.
After lunch, we went searching for the two jetties we had stopped at yesterday. Firstly, at the one where we fed the Tarpon fish, there was a local baiting the fish and with my camera I was able to catch the Tarpon in mid jump. I do love my new Fujifilm X-T1 camera. Not too bulky yet still takes great pictures. The pelicans also posed for me – in mid-flight too! However, we never did get as far as the seahorses but were distracted and headed for iced coffee instead.
It was still hot with no sign of the thunderstorms, so time to head for the hammocks on the hotel rooftop to relax and read. It is good to finally have a lazy day and catch up on admin and generally chilling out. Sunset is at around 5:30pm here so we sat the hotel jetty and watched the sun go down. No great sunset, but still a view to savour.
