Cities of the Silk Road: Ferghana Valley

Finally, as an extension to the main tour, we drove (or, technically, were driven) over the mountains and into the Ferghana Valley to see yet another part of Uzbekistan and some more of the traditional crafts.

Then it was a flight back to Tashkent taking us full circle. Tashkent was also where we said goodbye to the rest of our group whilst we stayed on for a few more days.

We then crossed the border back in to Uzbekistan to visit the ancient Silk Road city of Khiva and the modern regional capital of Nukus where we learned more about the history of this part of Uzbekistan.

After the bizarre sights of Ashgabat we then drove north through the desert to the sink hole gas craters of Darvaza for more craziness. We camped overnight by the burning crater before continuing north to the town of Konya Urgench.

Cities of the Silk Road: Ashgabat

From Mary, it was a short flight to Ashgabat which lived up to its reputation of being a very strange city indeed.

After Bukhara we continued across the border into Turkmenistan and then on to the city of Mary where we saw some spectacular new buildings as well as the ancient sites of Merv and Gonur Depe.

After Samarkand, we drove down to Bukhara, which – along with all the other places – turned out to be one of our favourite places on this trip.
