A Day Of Two Halves
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/DSF6091_thumb.jpg
8th September 2017 At least our overnight train was a soft sleeper and so we were in four berth cabins with doors. The train was much more comfortable than the previous one from Xi’an and I was woken by the …
Bingling Ding Dong
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/DSF6018_thumb-1.jpg
7th September 2017 We’re heading on again today. After our fascinating detour to Xiahe, we have an(other) overnight train taking us further northwest along one of the main Silk Road branches. First though, it is back on the bus for …
Monks And Nomads
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/DSC2260_thumb.jpg
5th and 6th September 2017 Having spent the night bumping along on the rail line between Xi’an and Lanzhou, we clamber out of our berths at 5:30am ready to disembark and find some breakfast. I was glad I had donned …
Terracotta Warriors
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/DSC2205_thumb-1.jpg
4th Sept. 2017 Why? It’s not the first time we’ve visited an ancient site and been left with a question (and I suspect that it won’t be the last). Today we visited the museum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum, …
Xi’an Day Tour
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/DSC2121_thumb.jpg
3rd September 2017 So our Silk Road Tour begins and, fittingly, today we visit the Shaanxi History Museum to learn about this epic road from China to Turkey, which is actually a number of different trade routes. Over the next …
Left To Our Own Devices
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/DSC1958_thumb.jpg
1st & 2nd Sept 2017 And so, our detour to Yunnan, the second phase of our trip is done. We head on feeling that there is more of Yunnan that we would have liked to have seen – both north …
Cities of the Silk Road: Ferghana Valley
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DGH5269-145x190.jpg
Finally, as an extension to the main tour, we drove (or, technically, were driven) over the mountains and into the Ferghana Valley to see yet another part of Uzbekistan and some more of the traditional crafts.
Cities of the Silk Road: Tashkent
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DGH4212-190x127.jpg
Then it was a flight back to Tashkent taking us full circle. Tashkent was also where we said goodbye to the rest of our group whilst we stayed on for a few more days.
Cities of the Silk Road: Khiva & Nukus
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DGH5196-Pano-139x190.jpg
We then crossed the border back in to Uzbekistan to visit the ancient Silk Road city of Khiva and the modern regional capital of Nukus where we learned more about the history of this part of Uzbekistan.
Cities of the Silk Road: Darvaza & Konya Urgench
https://www.thehornseys.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DGH5042-190x145.jpg
After the bizarre sights of Ashgabat we then drove north through the desert to the sink hole gas craters of Darvaza for more craziness. We camped overnight by the burning crater before continuing north to the town of Konya Urgench.
